Away in a Manger is a Christmas carol, popular in Western culture. The song was first written in 1882 and is popular among younger children and schools. It is one of the most common carols in the United Kingdom, ranking joint second in a Gallup poll from 1996. The carol is still considered to be entirely American in nature, despite long claims that it was written by German religious reformer Martin Luther. One of the early appearances of this carol was on 2nd March 1882. This Christmas carol is mainly about Jesus in his crib

Cradle Song[]

'Cradle Song' is the traditional melody in the United Kingdom and Ireland. The tune was first published as part of the compilation Around the World with Christmas (1895), a 'Christmas Exercise' for schools containing material representing different countries: 'Away in a Manger' was used as a representative of 'The German Fatherland' under the title 'Luther's Cradle Hymn.' Kirkpatrick's melody was later included in a number of hymn books, and it was the setting that, according to Hill, 'first brought the words beyond the borders of the United States,' appearing in collections such as Carey Bonner's Sunday School Hymnary (1905). Outside of the United States, it is the most famous musical adaptation of 'Away in a Manger.'
