Santa's reindeers are animals that pull his sleigh through the sky on Christmas Eve to deliver presents. They are said to live with him at the North Pole. According to the myth, it is Santa's magic that lets his reindeers fly.

Origins[]

  • Santa's animal companions are first mentioned in an 1821 illustrated children's poem written by an anonymous poet.
  • The first 8 reindeers were named by Clement Clarke Moore in his poem, Twas the Night Before Christmas. In the poem, Dooner was called Dunder and Blitzen was named Blixen. These were later changed. Rudolph was first named in 1939 by Robert L. May.

Single reindeer[]

The first mention of Santa's sleigh being drawn by reindeer appears in 'Old Santeclaus with Much Delight,' a New York-published illustrated children's poem from 1821. The author's and illustrator's identities are unknown.

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer[]

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (also known as Rudolph) is the ninth and youngest of Santa's reindeers, which guides Santa's sleigh on Christmas Eve. Rudolph is a male reindeer, who has a red nose and was created by Robert Lewis May. He first appeared in a 1939 booklet.
